This is the question I hear very often. A client calls in a
panic because their investment in their trophies is being invaded by bugs.
These bugs just seem to show up one day and the damage they cause, is found at
the same time. These bugs could be moths or beetles and there are known to be
hundreds of varieties roaming the earth.
You may have caused this problem on your own by bringing a
partially cleaned skull in to your room from the woods, in this process you
just brought in your starter colony. These bugs don’t take long to multiply and
explore other trophies, wools, and even your wool carpets.
Pets may be how some eggs or adults started into your house,
they can hitch a ride and come to visit your house.
Pantry pests, the ones you get in your dry goods through a
torn bag are also the same ones that like your trophy mounts. We have found
some in grocery stores in the bulk food section in the dog snacks or treats.
Some of our clients unknown to themselves raise their own
colony, in pet food containers that they keep adding more food, before the
container is empty. The bugs keep multiplying in the bottom forming their own
habitat.
Have you ever had a spotless kitchen and then some bananas
get a little too ripe? All of a sudden you have fruit flies, sometimes the bugs
just show up this way.
Trophy DOC is available to help you maintain your mounts, and
you should have them taken care of to prevent any future damage by letting us
bug proof your mounts.
Our five step process includes;
·
Remove the dust and dirt from mounts
·
Spray with cleaner and bug proofer
·
Polish the eyes
·
Gloss the nose
·
Oil the horns and antlers bringing out the natural
colors (Sheep and Goats are not oiled as this will make them dark and unnatural
looking).
